๐Ÿ“– How To

Listener's Manual

New to scanner radio? Never used Rdio Scanner before? No worries โ€” this guide walks you through everything from the blinking lights to searching past calls.

๐Ÿš€ Getting Started

Listening to PA Scanners requires nothing more than a modern web browser. Here's how to get up and running in under a minute:

  1. Click any Listen Now button on this site โ€” it opens the scanner at radio.keystonescanner.com:3000
  2. The scanner loads automatically and starts playing live audio right away
  3. Make sure your device volume is turned up โ€” the stream is live, so you may need to wait a few seconds between transmissions
  4. That's really it. You're listening to live Pennsylvania public safety radio!
Mobile tip: On phones and tablets, tap the play button if audio doesn't start automatically โ€” browsers sometimes require a user interaction before playing audio.

๐Ÿ’ก Understanding the Display

The Rdio Scanner interface shows you real-time information about what's transmitting. Here's what each part of the screen means:

System: The radio system being received โ€” for example, a county name refers to that area's P25 trunked radio system.

Talkgroup: Think of this like a channel. "Fire Dispatch" is one talkgroup, "EMS North" is another. Each department or function has its own talkgroup.

Frequency: The actual radio frequency in MHz being decoded. Displayed in large digits in the center of the screen.

Call History: The list of recent transmissions below the main display. You can click any past call to replay it.

๐ŸŸข LED Indicators

The colored LED dots in the top-left corner of the scanner tell you the status of the current transmission at a glance.

Green (solid)

A transmission is actively being received and played. Someone is talking right now.

Green (blinking)

The scanner is live and monitoring โ€” waiting for the next transmission.

Yellow

A call is paused, on hold, or the talkgroup has been temporarily muted.

Red

The talkgroup is marked as avoided/skipped โ€” this call is being ignored.

Blue

Typically indicates a system or talkgroup being held (locked) on that channel.

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Control Buttons Explained

The buttons across the bottom of the scanner control how it behaves. Here's what each one does:

ButtonWhat It Does
LIVE FEEDJumps back to the live stream if you've been browsing past calls. Think of it as the "go back to now" button.
HOLD SYSLocks the scanner onto the current system only. Good for focusing on a single county or agency group.
HOLD TGLocks onto the current talkgroup only. Use this to follow just Fire Dispatch, or just EMS, without flipping around.
REPLAYReplays the current or most recent transmission from the beginning. Handy when you caught only part of a call.
AVOIDSkips the current talkgroup. If a certain channel is too noisy or you're not interested, this mutes it temporarily.
SEARCHOpens a search bar so you can look through call history by talkgroup name, system, or keyword.
PAUSEPauses playback. The scanner keeps buffering in the background โ€” unpause to catch up.
SELECT TGOpens a list of all talkgroups. Use this to jump directly to a specific department or channel.

๐Ÿ” Searching Past Calls

One of the most useful features is the ability to search and replay recent transmissions. Here's how:

  1. Press the SEARCH button in the scanner interface
  2. Type a talkgroup name, system name, or any keyword you're looking for
  3. Browse the results โ€” each entry shows the time, talkgroup, and duration of the call
  4. Click any result to play it back instantly
  5. Press LIVE FEED when you're ready to return to the live stream
Pro tip: You can scroll through the call history list below the main display even without using Search. Just scroll down to see recent calls and click any one to replay it.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Using on Mobile

PA Scanners works great on phones and tablets. A few things to keep in mind on mobile devices:

The interface is fully responsive and touchscreen-friendly. Swipe through the call history, tap buttons to control playback, and pinch-zoom if you need a closer look at talkgroup info.

For the best experience on mobile, keep your screen from auto-locking while listening โ€” or try using the browser's "Add to Home Screen" feature to launch PA Scanners like an app from your phone's home screen.

Background audio: Most mobile browsers will continue playing scanner audio even when you switch apps or lock your screen โ€” just like a music app. If audio stops, tap the browser notification or return to the tab to resume.
